How much does TaxJar cost?

TaxJar offers two plans: Starter and Professional. The Starter plan starts at $39 a month, and the Professional plan starts at $99 a month. Each of these plans allows businesses to choose from a variety of price tiers based on the number of orders each month.

Key differences between the Starter and Professional plan

TaxJar’s two plans – Starter and Professional – each provide different features based on your business needs. You can review your options and easily change your plan within your TaxJar Account Plan & Billing page. You can also switch to an annual plan at any time for a 10% or more discount on your subscription price.

How to choose the best plan for your sales tax needs

Choosing the best TaxJar plan depends on how you sell, where you sell, and how much automation your team requires. Use the guidelines below to identify the best fit for your current sales tax needs.

The Starter plan is best if:

  • You sell on marketplaces: You primarily sell on platforms like Amazon, Etsy, or eBay, the marketplace handles the tax calculations at checkout. This plan is designed to import those calculations and simplify your filing process. You are using another provider to monitor your sales tax obligation thresholds.
  • You use simple, built-in integrations: You plan to use up to three standard data import integrations (like Shopify, PayPal, or QuickBooks Online) where the cart itself handles the calculations at checkout. You do not need real-time sales tax calculations.
  • You are a single-user team: You don't need multiple logins or defined user roles for a larger accounting team.

The Professional plan is best if:

  • You need real-time calculations: You require the TaxJar API to calculate sales tax in your checkout in real-time. This is essential for Woo, BigCommerce, Magento, or custom-built stores.
  • You are growing and have more sales tax obligations coming soon: You sell across many states and need the Economic Nexus Insights tool to proactively alert you when you’re approaching a new state’s tax obligation threshold.
  • You require advanced compliance tools: You need to store exemption certificates, perform address validation, or require a sandbox environment for developer testing.
  • You have a larger team or ERP needs: You need multi-user access with defined roles, phone support (available for 1K+ order tiers), or would like a dedicated Customer Success Manager (available for 25K+ order tiers.)

How to choose a pricing tier based on order volume

TaxJar offers numerous pricing tiers for each plan type. These tiers are based on order volume. Businesses choose an order tier based on monthly sales volume history.

Not sure what your sales volume will be? TaxJar allows subscribers to make plan adjustments seamlessly at any time, upgrading order tiers to accommodate higher or lower order volumes, so it’s okay to make an estimate on order tier and adjust later.

Flex fees: What if I have more orders a month than expected?

Our plans are built for your average order volume, but we know businesses often have fluctuations in sales. If you have a high-sales month, flex fees give you the flexibility to temporarily move to a higher tier without a permanent commitment. You only pay for the extra volume when you need it, and you’ll automatically return to your original plan the following month. No penalties—just pay for what you use.

Strategic cost savings: Many TaxJar customers choose an order tier that covers their average order volume and use flex fees to bridge the gap during peak seasons, like the holiday shopping season. This allows you to maintain a lower monthly or annual subscription cost rather than paying for a high-volume tier year-round that you only use occasionally.

If you are on an annual plan and incur a flex fee, you will be billed for the difference between the monthly tier amounts, in addition to your monthly subscription price, and an invoice will be generated for the month you incurred the overage. Here’s how flex fees work:

Subscribed plan Order overage amount Flex fee applied
Professional 500  250 orders (for a total of 750 orders) The difference between the Professional 500 plan and the Professional 1K plan:
$499 - $249 = $250 in flex fees
Starter 50K 20K orders (for a total of 70K orders) The difference between the Starter 50K plan and the Starter 75K plan:
$1,999 - $1,4999 = $500 flex fee
Professional 250K  100K orders (for a total of 350K orders) The difference between the Professional 250K and the Professional 500K plan:
$13,999 - $8,999 = $5,000 flex fee

How to estimate your total monthly cost

Your total TaxJar cost consists of three parts: your plan type and order tier, your filing costs, and any one-time registration needs. Use the framework below to estimate your monthly cost.

1. Choose your plan type and tier

First, determine your plan (Starter or Professional) and your order volume tier. This is your subscription cost. Remember that your order tier is priced differently depending on your plan type:

  • Starter: Based solely on the number of transactions imported each month.
  • Professional: Based on a combination of imported transactions (1 order per imported transaction) and API tax calculations/rate lookups (1/10th of an order per call). We walk you through how to calculate order tier on this Knowledge Base article

Choose between a monthly or annual plan, with annual plans including more than a 10% subscription discount.

Remember: If you occasionally exceed your order limit, TaxJar doesn't cut you off or charge a penalty fee. We simply charge a flex fee—the difference between your current tier and the tier you actually used for that month. After that month, you’ll automatically revert back to your original plan.

2. Factor in the filing costs of AutoFile

If you want to file manually, the subscription cost includes the use of our sales tax reports, which can help you file in each state. If you’d like TaxJar to file for you via AutoFile, there are additional costs to consider. To determine how many filing credits you’ll need, calculate the number of states where you file sales tax, the filing frequency for each state (monthly, quarterly, annually), and any states where you expect to have sales tax obligations soon.

  • Each plan comes with credits:
    • Starter: Includes two AutoFile credits per year, allocated one every 6 months.
    • Professional: Includes four AutoFile credits per year, allocated one every quarter.
  • Additional filings: If you file in more states than your credits cover, you can choose:
    • Pay-as-you-go: $50/return (Starter) or $55/return (Professional).
    • AutoFile bundles: Annual subscribers can purchase bundles of 25, 50, 100, or unlimited filings at a discounted rate. This is the most cost-effective option for multi-state sellers.
Filings Starter Professional
Pay-as-you-go $50 / filing $55 / filing
25 $1,125 $1,250
50 $2,225 $2,500
100 $4,500 $5,000
Unlimited $10,000 $12,000

3. One-time state registrations

Before you can file in a new state, you must have a valid sales tax permit. If you don't want to navigate the state paperwork yourself, TaxJar offers a registration service.

  • Cost: A one-time fee per registration of $299.
  • What’s included: Our experts handle the application process from start to finish, ensuring you are registered correctly so you can begin collecting and remitting tax immediately.

Cost estimation

To get a rough monthly estimate, use this simple formula:

Subscription price + ([Total returns per month]-[included filing credits] x [AutoFile cost]) + number of registrations needed = estimated monthly total

Example: A Professional 1K monthly user ($499/mo) filing monthly in three states. They use one included credit and pay for two additional returns ($55 x 2), they need one state registration.

  • Total monthly estimate: $499 + ([3-1] x 55] + 299 = $908/month (before sales tax)

Example: A Starter 500 annual user ($629/year) filing monthly in four states. They use both of their included credits and pay for two additional returns ($50 x 2), they need two state registrations.

  • Total annual estimate: $629 + ([48-2] x 50] + ($299 x 2) = $3,527/year (before sales tax)
