Set up your TaxJar account

New to TaxJar? Follow these steps to set up your TaxJar account.

In this article:

Set up your business profile

Click Account at the top right of your TaxJar Dashboard and select your Business profile, where you’ll need to complete the following informational fields:

1. Email: Enter the email address associated with your company’s TaxJar account. All TaxJar correspondence will be sent to this email address. (Note: If multiple people need to receive TaxJar emails, we recommend either creating one email account that several people can access or setting up email forwarding to individual users.)

2. First name

3. Last name

4. Business name

5. Federal tax ID

6. Default shipping address: If your order details do not include a ship_from address, we’ll use this address as the origin location to calculate sales tax.

7. Billing address: This address is used to determine the sales tax you’ll be charged on your TaxJar invoices and doesn’t impact the sales tax rate calculated for your customers’ orders.

Click Save Information once you have entered or updated the information on this page.

Set up your TaxJar state settings

Click Account at the top right of your TaxJar Dashboard and select State settings

TaxJar will automatically add the state in which your business is located. To add any additional states where you currently have nexus, click the green Add state with nexus button, then fill out the informational fields listed below. (Note: If you’re not sure where to find this information, consult your state registration permit or reach out to the state directly.)

1. State: Select the state from the dropdown menu.

2. State assigned payment schedule: Select the filing frequency you were assigned by the state.

3. State registered business name: This should match the company name on file with the state.

4. Nexus established: Select the date your business established nexus in the state. While this field is not required, entering a nexus date ensures that your TaxJar reports exclude prior sales.

5. License type: For specific states, you may need to specify your license type. For example, Alabama may have issued you either a standard sales and use tax license or a simplified seller use tax license.

6. State tax ID: The unique identifier assigned by the state.

7. Shipping and handling taxability: Default taxability settings for shipping may be adjustable in states where shipping is generally tax-exempt.

8. Enable TaxJar's API to calculate sales tax for this state: Leave this option unchecked for now. If your integration uses TaxJar’s API, you’ll be given instructions to select this option in the Set up your integration instructions for your integration.

When you’re finished adding all the information for a state, don’t forget to click the Save Information button at the bottom of the screen.

Set up your integration

Once the steps above are complete, you're ready to set up your integration. Instructions for common integrations are below; others can be found in the Integrations section of this Knowledge Base. If you wish to use TaxJar’s API, refer to the TaxJar API documentation for instructions.
