What should I do if I receive a notice for a return that was AutoFiled?
If you receive a notice from a state for a return that was filed via AutoFile, please send the following details to support@taxjar.com:
- Your name
- Your TaxJar account email address
- The filing period referenced in the notice you received
- A copy of the notice you received in its entirety
- We discuss this in more detail here.
I received a frequency change notification from the state. How do I update my AutoFile enrollment?
From time to time, the states will send out notices announcing a new Filing Frequency for your sales tax account.
As the owner of the registration, you are the direct recipient of all state-issued notifications regarding your sales tax license (including frequency changes) and our system does not receive this detail from the state.
- We require a copy of this notice so we can file your last return with the current frequency. Our Filing team can then update your AutoFile enrollment to the new frequency when the time comes.
- If you don't share these notices with TaxJar, your AutoFile enrollment will not get updated to match the new frequency. This may result in penalty or interest fees from the state for missed returns with the new frequency, and you'll be responsible for those fees.
Should I update this myself?
No; please don't attempt to make this change on your end.
- If you receive one of these notices, please don't attempt to update your frequency in your account--making this change too early could result in missing the frequency for your final return with the current frequency.
What should I do to make sure my frequency gets updated?
Please email a copy of your frequency change notice to support@taxjar.com.
- Once our filing Team receives the notice, they'll review to verify the first date for filings with the new frequency and update your enrollment on our end so that your frequency will automatically update to match the state's new schedule for your account.
What if I'm not enrolled in AutoFile?
If you're not enrolled in AutoFile, then you are responsible for filing your State Sales Tax Returns on your own.
- After you file your sales tax return under the former filing filing due date, you will need to update your filing frequency in your TaxJar account.
- Don't forget to record the payment in the Filing History of your TaxJar Account.
If I'm enrolled for AutoFile, how can I apply a state credit to my tax payment?
If you've received a notice from the state that you have a credit, please share a copy of the change of credit notice you received from the state with us at support@taxjar.com.
- Once we have a copy of that notice, our filing team will review and confirm whether we can support getting this credit applied to a future return in that state.
If we are able to utilize the credit, then you will receive a confirmation email from our filing team when it has been successfully applied to your AutoFile return.
- Please note that when you view your TaxJar Filing History, you will see the actual return amount before the credit listed under Tax Amount Paid, however, that is not the amount you paid to the state.
- Because that was the actual amount of the filing, that is how we record filings in your Filing History and we exclude any credits from the state. However, your total payment will be the Tax Amount Paid minus the credit.
- All amounts will be detailed in the confirmation email sent by our filing team.
