Jurisdiction breakdowns in reports

How do I find jurisdiction breakdowns of my sales?

You can access your sales tax Reports for origin and destination states from your Dashboard by clicking the "Sales Tax Report" button for any state on your  TaxJar Dashboard.

Depending on the state, you may (or may not) need to report your sales to the state by the local jurisdiction (city, county, etc.) when you file your returns.

Sales tax for origin-based states is determined by the seller’s location, so sellers in origin-based state will charge the same sales tax rate for all orders shipped to that state.

  • You won't need to report sales by jurisdiction when you file if you collect an origin rate.

However, if you need to collect destination based rates, you'll charge sales tax based on the rate where the buyer is located.

  • Our destination state Reports offer a breakdown by county, city, and jurisdiction to help simplify the process of filing your returns:

If you used to be able to see your jurisdiction breakdowns for your destination-based state Reports and a Marketplace is now collecting for that state, we recommend reading the changes we have detailed here about how Marketplace Facilitator collections affect your Reports.

I don't see the jurisdiction breakdowns in my reports

There may be two reasons you are not seeing the county, city or local breakdowns in your Reports:

1. If this is a recent change, then you may be selling through a supported cart which is a Marketplace Facilitator that is collecting and remitting sales taxes on your behalf.

  • We have more information here and explain how TaxJar handles these changes per state here.
  • Our Reports display your Marketplace Sales amount per each state’s requirements but this ensures you do not pay tax on those Marketplace collected transactions when you manually file or when we submit your returns to the states with AutoFile.
  • If all of your sales are Marketplace sales, once the marketplace sales are accounted within our system, THEN a $0 return may be required.
  • Please check your state here for state-specific information on how to file or regarding filing requirements.

2. In your report, if you see a sub-section with a little arrow to the right, then please click directly on the title to expand this sub-section:

This is a Sample of the California Report - your State Report may be different as our Reports are specific to each state.

Can I see sales by individual locations in my reports?

TaxJar's reports currently support sellers who have registered with a single physical location in the state.

  • Because of this, we do not currently separate sales by each individual physical location you registered with the state.
