Virginia: Registration tips for in state and out of state sellers
The state of Virginia assigns slightly different registration numbers to sellers depending upon whether or not you are an in state seller or an out of state seller.
- Before enrolling in AutoFile for Virginia, you'll need to verify that your registration number properly reflects your status as an in state or out of state seller.
How to verify that you are correctly registered as an an In State seller:
An in state seller with a physical (non Amazon) location in the state of Virginia should have a Virginia Business Tax ID that begins with '10'.
How to verify that you are correctly registered as an Out of State seller:
An out of state seller without a physical location in the state of Virginia should have a Virginia Business Tax ID that begins with a '12'.
I registered incorrectly; can I still enroll in AutoFile?
You won't be able to enroll in AutoFile until after you have corrected your registration with the state to match your status as an in-state seller or an out-of-state seller.
How can I correct my registration?
As the taxpayer and account holder, you are the only person who is authorized to change your state registration. To correct your state registration and obtain a new account number that matches your seller status, please contact the state at: 804-367-8037.
The state will likely direct you to follow the steps below, but please contact the state first in order to receive specific direction from them regarding your account specifically:
- Complete the R-1 form with the State of Virginia.
- Fax or mail the completed form and note to VA DOT according to the instructions found on the last page of the R-1 form.
Because we cannot give legal advice, please contact the VA DOT at 804-367-8037 for more specifics about correcting your information.
