How to delete CSV imports

You can delete completed CSV imports from the Spreadsheet Imports page in TaxJar. This is useful when you upload a file by mistake or no longer need its transactions.

Deleting an import permanently removes the transactions included in that CSV file. If those transactions affect an AutoFile return or a closed filing period, TaxJar may show a warning or prevent deletion.

Important: Deleting an CSV import is permanent and cannot be undone. Before deleting a file, confirm that you no longer need the transactions it contains.

View your spreadsheet imports

  1. Sign in to the TaxJar Dashboard.
  2. Go to Account.
  3. Select Linked Accounts.

  1. Select Manage CSV Files.

The Spreadsheet Imports table displays your CSV imports and their current status.

Find an import

Use filters to locate a specific import or review imports within a particular time period.

  1. Select Filters in the upper-right corner of the table.

  1. Use one or more of the following filters:
  • Status: View imports with a status of Pending, Processing, Failed, or Completed.
  • Filename: Search for a specific CSV filename.
  • Date range: Set a start date and end date.

The table displays up to 25 imports per page. Use the page numbers or Previous and Next controls at the bottom of the table to view additional imports.

Delete a CSV Import

You can delete one or more completed CSV imports from the Spreadsheet Imports table.

  1. Locate the completed CSV import you want to delete.
  2. Select the checkbox next to the import.

  1. Select Delete Import.

  1. In the Permanently delete imports window, review:
    • The filename or filenames selected
    • The number of transactions that will be permanently removed

    1. Select the required acknowledgment checkbox:

I understand this is permanent and cannot be undone.

       6. Select Permanently delete.

The import status changes to Deleting while TaxJar processes your request. When the deletion is complete, the status changes to Deleted.

    When deletion requires additional action

TaxJar checks whether a CSV import overlaps with an AutoFile return or a closed filing period. Depending on the filing status, TaxJar may show a warning or require you to take action before you can delete the import.

The associated AutoFile return is paused

If the CSV import is associated with a paused AutoFile return, TaxJar displays a warning similar to:

[filename.csv] paused AutoFile for [State Period]. Deleting these transactions will change totals when you resume the filing.

You can delete the import, but review the return totals before you resume filing.

An AutoFile return is in progress

If an AutoFile return is currently in progress for the affected state and period, TaxJar prevents deletion. You may see a message similar to:

[filename.csv] AutoFile is currently in progress for [State Period]. Pause the return on your AutoFile dashboard, then try again.

The AutoFile return has already been submitted

If the CSV import’s transactions overlap with an AutoFile return that has already been submitted, TaxJar prevents deletion. You may see a message similar to:

[filename.csv] The CSV receipts overlap with a submitted AutoFile return. Please contact support for assistance.

Contact TaxJar Support for assistance. Changes to transactions associated with a submitted filing may require a manual amendment.

    The filing period is closed

If the CSV import’s transactions overlap with a filing period that was manually closed, TaxJar prevents deletion. You may see a message similar to:

[filename.csv] The CSV receipts overlap with a closed period [State Period]. Reopen the period from Filing History, then try again. If you've already filed this period with a tax authority, you may need to file an amendment.

If you have already filed the period directly with the tax authority, you may need to submit an amended return. Consider consulting a tax professional if you are unsure how a deleted transaction could affect a previously filed return.

The CSV import updated existing transactions

A CSV import may update existing transactions when it contains transaction IDs that already exist in your account.

When you delete this type of import, TaxJar displays a warning similar to:

[filename.csv] [X] transaction(s) in this import have the same ID as existing data. Deleting this import removes them entirely; they won't revert to their previous values.

Review the affected transactions before deleting the import.

    Troubleshooting

I cannot select an import for deletion

Only completed imports may be eligible for deletion. If an import is still Pending or Processing, wait for processing to finish and try again.

My import is stuck in “Deleting”

The deletion is still being processed. Refresh the page after a few minutes to check whether the status has changed to Deleted.

TaxJar will not let me delete my CSV import

Review the message in the deletion window. The import may overlap with:

    • An AutoFile return that is in progress. Pause the return from your AutoFile dashboard, then try again.
    • A submitted AutoFile return. Contact TaxJar Support for assistance.
    • A closed filing period. Reopen the period from Filing History, then try again.
