Professional account: What is the Transaction Insights tab?
TaxJar Professional subscribers have access to the Transaction Insights tab within each state-specific Sales Tax Report in TaxJar.
Within this tab, you can review and reconcile your Report's transactions. We will help you break out and understand transactions where we estimate you have:
- Over-collected sales tax for that period
- Under-collected sales tax for that period
- Not collected any sales tax on for that period
- Penny variances for that period
On the top line of this tab, we will show you the transactions that are making this report and the overall net variance amount for the period. This amount would be the difference between your Actual Sales Tax Collected and Expected Sales Tax Due report.
Over-collected transactions:
These are transactions within the period where we estimate you may have over-collected sales tax. We will show you the over-collected amount along with a Tip to help you understand the variance and what you may be able to do to adjust this and collect more accurately. You can click the "View transactions" button to view the specific transactions in this category.
Under-collected transactions:
These are transactions within the period where we estimate you may have under-collected sales tax. We will show you the under-collected amount along with a Tip to help you understand the variance and what you may be able to do to adjust this and collect more accurately. You can click the "View transactions" button to view the specific transactions in this category.
No sales tax charged:
These are transactions within the period where we see that no sales tax was collected but we don't see why. We will show you the under-collected amount along with a Tip to help you understand the variance and what you may be able to do to adjust this and collect more accurately. You can click the "View transactions" button to view the specific transactions in this category.
If any of these transactions were sold to wholesale/resale, government, or other exempt entities (like a charity) you can classify those by clicking the " View transactions" button and designating the transaction(s) as exempt. We show you how to do this here.
Penny variances:
These are transactions within the period where we estimate you may have under or over-collected sales tax. We will show you the under or over-collected amount along with a Tip to help you understand the variance and what you may be able to do to adjust this and collect more accurately.* You can click the "View transactions" button to view the specific transactions in this category.
Note: A penny variance is non-critical and can be common with sales tax calculations. We wrote a blog post with more details about sales tax variances here.
As a reminder, although this tab helps you drill down into the transactions with variances, the overall net variance amount for the period is calculated and displayed on the top bar of this tab.
How can I see jurisdiction tax breakdowns for my transactions?
