Kansas: AutoFile for the correct tax type
Kansas has both a Retailer's Compensating Use Tax and a Sales Tax.
The rates for both taxes are the same, but according to the state's website:
- In state sellers should file the Sales Tax return (This account has a prefix of 004.)
- Out of state sellers should file the Retailer's Compensating Use Tax return (This account has a prefix of 005.)
When sellers first register with the state, the DOR sets up both account types in your e-file account, and each account will have a different account prefix and access code.
- Although the state provides setup for both account types, you'll need to take care to file under the correct account type for your registration.
- If you file under the incorrect account type, you'll receive a letter from the state notifying you that you are filing incorrectly..
TaxJar AutoFiles in Kansas based on the account prefix number you provide when you complete the AutoFile enrollment form.
